Pakistan’s move against Taliban ‘appropriate response’: US

WASHINGTON: Military operations against the Taliban in the North-West Frontier Province “are exactly the appropriate response” to halt their progress, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said on Tuesday.

“We are encouraging of these efforts,” said Morrell. “We hope they (Pakistan) can sustain these operations”.

Pakistan troops backed by warplanes launched on Tuesday a new operation in Buner in the Swat valley, as Islamabad intensified its efforts to flush out Taliban in the area.

A senior Pakistani military official told AFP that warplanes were pounding suspected Taliban hideouts on the mountains overlooking the town, but he had no casualty figures.

The operation follows an offensive mounted in Lower Dir on Sunday, which chief military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas said had now been completed. afp
