KARACHI: Vice Chancellor, Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS), Karachi Prof Dr Masood Hameed has been misleading the British High Commission, Islamabad, for issuance of visas for the staff of the university, who are not eligible for it. There are dozens of people in the lower staff who have been granted visas to the United Kingdom for attending different training courses with wrong designations being provided by the VC DUHS Prof Dr Masood Hameed, close-aid of ex-Governor Sindh Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, just to get them acquire the visas well-placed sources told Daily Times. In the year 2011, Prof Dr Masood Hameed forwarded a letter to the British High Commissioner, Islamabad with a request to issue a visa to audiologist of the DUHS for training. “Shahid Akhtar, who was shown as audiologist in the visa letter is basically a lab assistant at the university and he is still holding the same post despite the spending of millions of rupees by the DUHS”, sources said. “Shahid Akhtar, Audiologist, Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi intends to visit your country from June 12, 2011 to September 8, 2011 for the following purpose. The ENT Department of this university is planning to start ‘Cochlear Implant’ program in the next 6 months. There is not a single programmer in government institutions to do a Cochlear Implant in Pakistan. The children who are born deaf need to have this surgery as their speech will not develop if this is not done. A few cases are done in the private sector at a huge cost”, according to the letter, forwarded to British High Commissioner, DUHS, a copy of which is exclusively available with Daily Times. “The ENT Society of United Kingdom has arranged the attachment of Shahid Akhtar as Speech Therapist/Audiologist at Dow University of Health Sciences for 3 months duration and the attachments will be supervised by ENT Society of the United Kingdom”, it said. “The Dow University of Health Sciences Karachi is bearing all expenses for this employee during his stay in the United Kingdom. To start this program, the audiologist and speech therapist are equally important and need to be trained simultaneously. The Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi shall be highly obliged if the above named employee is granted Visa to visit your country”, the letter further revealed.
