ISLAMABAD: The administration of Jinnah Sports Complex Islamabad has digested over Rs 40.88 million on the name of renovation and overhauling of the swimming pools, which are still incomplete even after lapse of four years. The complex is in bad shape due to the fact that maintenance of the biggest sports complex of the country could not be carried out for last many years physically but on papers it had done several times. The tiles of swimming pools were disjointed and broken from almost every nook and corner of the pools. The project was approved by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP) in 2012. The cost of the project was estimated Rs 50.53 million at that time out of which some Rs 40.88 million have been incurred on its renovation work. The sources said that Rs 6.4 million were issued for the project in 2014-15 but the construction could not get completed. The pools which were made for water are filled with mud, whereas major cracks can be seen on the walls of pools. Out of three swimming pools, only one is operational, which is used by few members of the sports complex while it was made for the students of the federal capital. The two other pools are reserved for international players with diving board installed on them. Both are in bad shape and gives look of some local empty puddle. The rusty climbing support of the pools exposed that they were never painted in the past. The pools were made keeping in view the international standards but the appalling condition of these pools not left any space for the national level swimmers to practice for their upcoming national and international competitions. Now the summer season has arrived but the administration of Sports Board did not bother to clean them so that the sportsmen and youth of the city could get benefit from these pools. Getting the new membership of the Sports Complex’s swimming pool for the common people is very tough task as it had been closed down since last decade but on the other hand influential and wealthy people are being entertained by taking bribe from them. The sources told this scribe that the capacity of common pool is 350,000 gallon of water, whereas international level pools can accommodate 700,000 gallon of water. But the only operational pool has much less quantity of water than its full capacity. Due to shortage of water in federal capital Islamabad, the management of Sports Board rotates the water in the pool for almost one year, however, some germicides are used so that the water in the poll looks clean. When Daily Times tried to contact DG Sports Board Akhtar Nawaz Ganjera, his cellular phone was not responding.
