ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the Senate Standing Committee Interior, Rehman Rehman Malik requested the senate secretariat on Wednesday to pass the bill for public execution of those found guilty of child sexual assault. In a letter written to senate, Rehman asked for an amendment in Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) Section 364A so perpetrators of rape and murder of minors could be publicly hanged. “In the Pakistan Penal Code, 1860 (XLV of 186), in section 364A, after the word ‘death’ the words ‘by hanging publicly’ shall be inserted,” quoted Malik in the letter. He also said that culprits of Zainab and Asma rape case should be publicly executed and an example should be set. “Zainab and Asma’s murderers should be hanged publicly and be made an example of,” the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader said. On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, while announcing arrest of the main accused in Zainab rape and murder case, also had said that he was in favour of public hanging of those who commit such crimes. “I wish to hang this beast in public at chowk but we are bound by the law and I request the chief justice of the Lahore High Court that this case be heard in the anti-terrorism court,” Shahbaz had said. On January 4, Zainab had gone missing after leaving her house for her maternal aunt’s house a few minutes away for religious lessons. A few days later, the victim’s body was recovered from a trash heap. An autopsy confirmed that she was strangled to death. It also suggested that she had been raped before being killed.
