Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and US Special Representative on Afghan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad on Friday agreed to continue consultations on the Afghan peace process.
At a meeting that took place here at the Foreign Office, both discussed joint efforts for restoring peace in Afghanistan and current situation in the region.
Foreign Minister Qureshi expressed the hope that peace deal between the United States and Taliban will pave way for intra-Afghan dialogue and also prove beneficial for stability in Afghanistan. He said Pakistan as its shared responsibility will continue to support efforts for peace in Afghanistan.
Ambassador Khalilzad updated Foreign Minister Qureshi on the ongoing peace talks with Taliban and lauded the reconciliatory role of Pakistan in this regard.
Separately, Khalilzad called on Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters. During the meeting, the two sides discussed matters of mutual interests, including overall regional security situation and ongoing Afghanistan reconciliation process, an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) press release said. The US envoy thanked Pakistan for facilitating the process towards the mutual objective of peace in the region.
