A Chinese high-school in Shangqiu was criticised for reducing sitting capacity in its cafeteria as means to make students spend more time studying. Students returning from summer vacations were shocked to learn that they would have to eat while standing because the capacity of seats was reduced by the school administration. However, this did not stop the students from turning to the cafeteria as scores could be seen standing and eating their meals. The move seems to have backfired because a lot of people are criticising it. A spokesperson for the Shangqiu school told reporters that management plans to implement assigned spots for each student to stand in, to further discourage them from wasting time instead of studying. The decision to introduce a military-styled ‘training’ is to prepare them for the Gaokao, which is said to be the toughest college entrance exam in China. The move has drawn a lot of criticism online, with many people arguing that it will not influence students’ performance at all, and might even lead to unhealthy eating habits.
