Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) Chairman, Latif Malik, urged the new government, on Thursday, to set targets for Pakistan embassies across the world for the promotion of Pakistani products and exploration of new markets. Malik, while addressing a meeting, said that the government should form a committee to review the subsidies given to the exporters by keeping in mind the prevailing situation of the country. Different PCMEA officials, including Saeed Khan, Qamar Zia, Riaz Ahmed, Major (retired) Akhtar Nazir and Akbar Malik, were also present in the meeting. Malik said that the Association would press upon the need to mainstream women labour so that the women (formal and informal) workers might get employment at their doorsteps. He said that Pakistan was one of the most innovative producers of new designs and varieties of carpets and the gains made in the United States market, during the last 12 years, would begin to give Pakistan an edge in the European Union if the new government tried for the carpet sector’s uplift. He said that our exports of carpet would likely to exceed $500 million mark if it was provided with the Commerce and Industry ministry’s support. Published in Daily Times, August 31st 2018.
