KARACHI: Munawwar Hussain Shaikh secured 108 votes to become president of the Pakistan Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) for the next term of four years in the elections held at the Movenpick Hotel here Wednesday night. Munawwar, who has served as secretary general for the PBSA for eight years, succeeded Alamgir Shaikh, who did not contest. Munawwar’s rival former international cueist Sarwar Siddiqui earned 66 votes. Two votes were declared invalid. A total of 176 votes were cast out of 241 eligible voters in the polls. Besides the president, the elections were held for the posts of senior vice-president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and seven members of the executive committee. The election commissioner Ayub Bawany announced the results in the presence of members of the two panels after the polling that lasted for three hours. Jawed H Karim was voted as senior vice-president securing 108 votes. He defeated Abdul Wahid Qadir who earned 64 votes with four declared invalid. Abdul Qadir Memon collected 112 votes to become vice-president as against Shahnawaz Khan who got 61 votes. Zulfiqar Ali Ramzi won the slot of secretary general. He polled 109 votes while his opponent Cyrus Kanga earned 64. Mohammad Azam Dar, director national sports federations, had especially come from Islamabad to attend the meeting as observer. According to him, the elections that were held in cordial atmosphere, was attended by representatives of all the four provincial associations. The elections were preceded by the annual general body meeting which was chaired by the outgoing president. Life chairman of the PBSF, Asghar Valika, was also in attendance. Speaking on the occasion, Alamgir threw light on his eight-year tenure and added that Pakistan captured six gold, seven silver and 14 bronze medals at international level. The salient features included Mohammad Asif and Hamza Akbar becoming world and Asian champions respectively while Mohammad Sajjad went down in the final of the world event. Irfan Moten has become treasurer by securing 115 votes while his rival Dr Amin Delawala got 56. PBBS office-bearers: Munawwar Hussain Shaikh (president), Jawed H Karim (senior vice-president), Abdul Qadir Memon (vice-president), Zulfiqar Ali Ramzi (secretary general) and Irfan Moten (treasurer). Executive committee members: Abdul Rashid Lehra (Jumbo), Imran Razzak Kassim, Muhammad Amin Bawany, Muhammad Shariq Vohra, Mustafa Abdul Aziz, Nisar Ali Bhagat and Shabbir Hussain Daruwala .
