The Mohammad Ali Jinnah University (MAJU) has decided to start PhD programmes in biotechnology, biochemistry in next year. The decision to this effect was made at a meeting held the other day. Those who attended the meeting included Dr Asim Imdad, Dr Khitab Gul and Dr Huma Javed from MAJU. The external members who participated in the meeting were included Dr Junaid Iqbal, (Agha Khan University) Prof Dr Shaikh Muhiuddin, (Karachi University) Dr Wasim Ahmed (Federal Urdu University) and Associate Professor Dr Raheela Rahmat Zohra (Karachi University). Addressing the meeting, Prof Dr Kamran Azim expressed his satisfaction over the last one year performance of Biosciences Department after its establishment. He said that the research reports of the faculty members have already been published in prominent international research journals. He briefed the meeting about Biosciences Department faculty’s meeting with industry professionals during which it was suggested to include pharmacopeia in the plan of study of BS-Biosciences. He further said that it was also pointed out by industry professionals that in computing courses, use of (MS Words, Excel and Power Point ) must be included so that students could be familiarize with internet research related Biosciences. Dr Kamran Azim while giving reason to start PhD programme in biochemistry and biotechnology said that the main objective is to prepare competent researchers who can conduct independent research. “Our MS-Biochemistry degree programme will provide an opportunity to obtain world class education by engaging students in a program of instruction that emphasizes: critical thinking, rigorous and effective application of the scientific method, quantitative analysis, fundamental chemical, biological and physical principles.
