GILGIT — The 78th Liberation Day of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is being celebrated today (Saturday) with great enthusiasm and national spirit across the region. Flag-hoisting ceremonies are being held in all districts, including Gilgit and Skardu, to mark the historic day.
The main ceremony is taking place at Chinar Bagh, Gilgit, where tributes are being paid to the martyrs and ghazis of the 1947 liberation struggle. Government officials, members of the Gilgit Scouts, and citizens are attending the event to honour those who fought for the region’s freedom. The Gilgit-Baltistan government has declared a public holiday to commemorate the day.

On November 1, 1947, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan, led by the Gilgit Scouts, revolted against the Dogra regime and declared independence, raising the Pakistani flag for the first time in the region. This historic uprising ended Dogra rule and played a significant role in the first Kashmir war, after which Gilgit-Baltistan became part of Pakistan.
In 1948, the people of Baltistan also achieved freedom after a year-long struggle against Indian forces. Today, Gilgit-Baltistan stands as a region rich in natural beauty, tourism potential, and economic promise, known for its picturesque landscapes, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality.
