Pakistan’s first China-built Hangor-class submarine, PNS/M Hangor, has arrived in Karachi, marking a significant milestone for the country’s naval modernization efforts. The arrival of the vessel highlights the growing importance of the Hangor-Class Submarine Program in strengthening Pakistan’s maritime defense capabilities.
Officials described the submarine as a symbol of naval strength, defense self-reliance, and advanced military technology. Equipped with modern combat systems, the submarine is expected to enhance the operational readiness of the Pakistan Navy and contribute to the protection of the country’s maritime interests.
The Hangor-class submarine features advanced Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) technology, allowing it to remain submerged for extended periods without surfacing. It is also fitted with modern sonar systems, a stealth-focused design, and capabilities for long-duration underwater operations, making it a valuable addition to Pakistan’s naval fleet.
The submarine’s arrival follows its commissioning ceremony in China held about a month ago. During that event, naval officials emphasized the importance of upgrading Pakistan’s underwater warfare capabilities to address evolving security challenges in regional waters.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf said disruptions to key maritime routes pose a serious threat to global trade and energy supplies. He noted that vessels under the Hangor-Class Submarine Program would play a vital role in safeguarding major sea lanes and commercial shipping routes in the Arabian Sea, thereby supporting regional maritime security.
