Sir: I am no supporter of President Zardari, but Mr Nawaz Sharif seems to have lost his way. They say that in politics, there are no friends, only interests. I may add that there are no permanent enemies in politics either. Mr Sharif focused all his efforts on the downfall of ‘the enemy’, i.e. Pervez Musharraf. He decided that the restoration of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry would bring about Musharraf’s ouster. Obsessed with his vendetta against Musharraf, he joined hands with the lawyers’ movement and even crossed the point of no return. In this headlong march, Mr Sharif did not notice that Musharraf is gone and that Justice Chaudhry is not needed for that purpose anymore. Mr Sharif also failed to understand that Justice Chaudhry, having humbled two presidents (Musharraf and Zardari) would become the most powerful third force in the country, making the elected government subservient to non-elected actors. It is a bit late in the game for Mr Sharif to realise that yesterday’s enemies have been replaced with new ones. His overtures to the Chaudhrys of the PMLQ are pitiable. Tunnel vision is not a suitable tool for the political workshop.KHALID AUnited Kingdom
