In light of escalating health problems in children such as obesity, nutrition deficiency, and stunted growth, Pakistan needs to utilize all tools at their disposal to protect and nurture its future. Individual lifestyle factors and the physical, socio-cultural, economic and political environments play a vital role in the beginning of childhood malnutrition and overweight. Childhood malnutrition and overweight is an issue that countries across the globe are facing, and Pakistan is no exception to it. The nutritional and health conditions in Pakistan have reached an alarming level over the past few years. The country ranks as the third highest number of children suffering from stunted growth, 43.70% of the total children under the age of 5 suffer from it. 15.10% were wasted and 31.50% were found to be underweight. Malnutrition also leads to the weakening of a child’s immune system which leaves them vulnerable to more diseases. There are various micronutrient deficiencies found in children 5 years of age, the most common one is Anemia which accounts for 61.90%, followed by Iron deficiency 43.80%, Vitamin A deficiency at 54.0%, Zinc deficiency at 39.20% and 40.0% were reported for Vitamin D deficiency. This is the result of a combination of dietary deficiencies, poor maternal & child health nutrition. The lack of proper or no water facilities can also come into play as lower hydration levels, especially in case of Pakistan which is a tropical country with long and harsh summers. These lower hydration levels become a contributing factor in an already high death rate of the country. Recently, an initiative United for Healthier Kids (U4HK) started globally to eradicate the factors leading to poor health of children. Under this initiative, the movement will work closely with all the major stakeholders to determine the obstacles that stand in the way as well as the solutions for a healthier childhood. U4HK started its journey with New Mexico which is facing a high prevalence of overweight and obesity. Philippines became the second stop for U4HK which has a very high prevalence of stunting. UAE became the third country to have U4HK campaign, with the help of MBC Al Amal Group and Arabian Radio Network. U4HK aims to create awareness amongst kids, parents, teachers, and policy makers of the risks children are exposed to and to bring a positive change for the betterment of children’s health by helping them to adopt healthy practices such as eating healthy foods, drinking water and exercising regularly. School attendance drops down because their immune system is adversely affected, along with shorter attention spans, which leads to poor learning and lower academic performance. In a relatively young country, like Pakistan, we bank on our offspring for the security of its future. So why is it that we can’t do everything possible for them? Why shouldn’t we use every option we have to help them grow into healthy well-adjusted adults? Raafia Islahi is a freelance writer who can be contacted on rislahi@gmail.com
