The federal government has granted a major relaxation in business operating hours by exempting commercial centres across Pakistan from the previously fixed closing timings until May 31.
According to an official notification issued by the Cabinet Division, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the temporary exemption, allowing businesses nationwide to continue operations beyond the earlier closure deadlines.

Under the latest decision, shops, markets, shopping malls and departmental stores will remain open according to their usual schedules throughout the week until the end of May. The move is expected to provide relief to traders and business owners who had raised concerns over restrictions affecting commercial activity.
The notification further stated that essential businesses, including bakeries, tandoors, restaurants and grocery stores, will also remain exempt from the prescribed business closure timings.
The decision comes shortly after provincial governments, including Punjab and Islamabad authorities, announced relaxations in restrictions related to commercial operating hours. Earlier, Punjab had lifted the 8pm business closing limit until June 1, while Islamabad also eased similar restrictions.
Business communities had repeatedly urged the government to review the earlier policy, arguing that shorter business hours negatively impacted sales, customer footfall and overall economic activity, especially amid inflationary pressures and reduced consumer spending.
Officials said the relaxation is aimed at facilitating businesses, supporting economic activity and addressing concerns raised by various trade bodies. However, authorities may review the exemption after May 31 depending on energy consumption trends and broader economic considerations.
The policy on business timings was originally introduced as part of national energy conservation measures intended to reduce electricity consumption and fuel imports.

With Eidul Azha approaching later this month, the temporary relief is also expected to benefit retailers by allowing extended shopping hours during the festive season, which typically sees increased market activity across the country.
Traders have welcomed the decision, calling it a practical step that will help revive business momentum and improve market accessibility for consumers.
