The BrahMos missile, jointly developed by India and Russia, is one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles and has become a central component of India’s growing defence export strategy. India has already supplied the system to the Philippines and recently signed an agreement with Indonesia.
According to one source, a potential deal with Vietnam could be valued at around 60 billion Indian rupees (approximately $629 million), including training, logistics, and operational support. However, another source said that while defence cooperation announcements may be made during the visit, a formal weapons contract is not expected to be signed immediately.
Vietnam is seen by India as a key strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly as New Delhi seeks to counterbalance China’s expanding influence in Asia. Defence cooperation between India and Vietnam has steadily grown in recent years alongside rising economic engagement.
President To Lam arrived in India on Tuesday, beginning his visit in Bodh Gaya, a major Buddhist pilgrimage site, before scheduled political and defence meetings in the capital.
Officials from both governments, as well as representatives of BrahMos Aerospace, have not yet commented on the potential discussions. BrahMos Aerospace is a joint venture between Indian and Russian defence entities.
