Pakistan and Tajikistan have agreed on a comprehensive road-map to boost bilateral trade to $200 million over the next three years while expanding cooperation in energy, agriculture, information technology, health, education and tourism during the 8th Session of the Joint Commission Meeting. Both sides have fixed on different potential sectors including trade, economy and Scientific-technical cooperation held in Dushanbe.
The two-day meeting, held on June 2-3, was co-chaired by Tajikistan’s Minister of Energy and Water Resources, Jum’a Daler Shofaqir, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division), Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari.
Both sides Ambassadors, Ambassador of Tajikistan to Pakistan, Sharifzoda Yusuf Toir and Ambassador of Pakistan to Tajikistan Irfan Ahmed also flunked by the both sides minister during the 8th Session of the Joint Commission Meeting. The Pakistani delegation included senior officials from the Economic Affairs Division, Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Ministry of National Health Services, Ministry of Industries and Production, Power Division, Petroleum Division, State Bank of Pakistan and the Inter-Provincial Coordination Ministry.
Both sides underscored the importance of strengthening trade and investment ties through enhanced business-to-business engagement, participation in trade exhibitions, exchange of trade information and closer collaboration between chambers of commerce. The parties agreed to organize trade delegations, B2B meetings and online business interactions to unlock new commercial opportunities. A key outcome of the session was the agreement to develop a three-year roadmap aimed at increasing bilateral trade volume to $200 million. The two countries also welcomed the finalization of a Memorandum of Understanding between Tajikistan’s Agency for Export and Pakistan’s Trade Development Authority.
Discussions were also held on a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA), which both sides described as an important step toward strengthening commercial relations. They agreed to continue consultations for its early conclusion.
In the energy sector, Pakistan and Tajikistan expressed satisfaction over progress on the CASA-1000 regional electricity transmission project and stressed the need for timely completion of the remaining work.
Both countries reaffirmed their participation in the CASA-1000 Joint Working Group meeting scheduled for June 2026 in Istanbul. The Tajik Ministry of Energy and Water Resources also agreed to cooperate with Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) and Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) regarding potential investment opportunities in Tajikistan’s exploration and production sector. Tajikistan pledged to facilitate access to technical and commercial data for Pakistani experts. The two sides further agreed to strengthen collaboration in pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, information technology and light industry.
Prospects for establishing joint ventures in pharmaceuticals, footwear manufacturing, artificial leather processing and chemical products were also discussed.
Pakistan offered specialized training programs for Tajik professionals in digital marketing, e-commerce, freelancing and digital content creation to promote cooperation in the IT sector.
In agriculture, both countries agreed to increase trade in agricultural products and collaborate on the transfer and testing of high-yield crop varieties, including cotton, wheat, potatoes and vegetables.
They also agreed to finalize a roadmap for agricultural cooperation covering 2026-2028 and enhance collaboration in phytosanitary and veterinary services. The health sector discussions focused on pharmaceutical registration, medical supplies, surgical instrument manufacturing and the possibility of establishing medical equipment production facilities in Tajikistan.
The commission also reviewed opportunities for cooperation in higher education, science and technology. Tajikistan proposed collaboration between the Tajikistan University of Technology and the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad, particularly in engineering, information technology and architecture.
The two countries agreed to encourage joint research initiatives in water resources, hydropower, ecology and agriculture, alongside exchanges of scientific information and innovative technologies.
Cultural exchanges, tourism, youth affairs and sports cooperation also featured prominently in the discussions.
Both sides agreed to promote mountain and adventure tourism across the Pamir-Karakoram-Hindukush region and jointly showcase the rich heritage of the historic Silk Route through sustainable tourism initiatives. Concluding the session, both delegations expressed satisfaction over the productive discussions and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Pakistan and Tajikistan. Pakistan appreciated the hospitality extended by the Government of Tajikistan, while the Tajik si de thanked Pakistan for its constructive engagement and commitment to advancing bilateral relations.
