Short-term inflation down by 0.56%

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation decreased by 0.56 percent during the week ended on June 4, 2026 for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.

According to the PBS data, SPI for the week under review declined to 355.55 points as compared to 357.54 points recorded in the previous week. On year-on-year basis, the SPI increased by 14.75 percent.

The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16=100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

However, the SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 0.32 percent to 336.62 points from 335.56 points. The SPI for consumption groups of Rs 17,733-22,888 also increased by 0.04 percent, while for groups of Rs 22,889-29,517, Rs 29,518-44,175 and above Rs 44,175 it decreased by 0.14 percent, 0.38 percent and 0.88 percent, respectively.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 items (43.14 percent) increased, 10 items (19.61 percent) decreased, while 19 items (37.25 percent) remained stable.

On Week-on-Week basis (WoW), the items that witnessed decline in prices included chicken which declined by 9.48 percent, followed by garlic 9.13 percent, diesel 7.01 percent, petrol 6.80 percent, pulse gram 0.38 percent, pulse mash 0.34 percent, pulse moong 0.11 percent, mustard oil 0.04 percent, beef 0.02 percent and firewood by 0.01 percent. On the other hand, major increase was observed in the prices of onions which rose by 28.16 percent, followed by potatoes 21.91 percent, tomatoes 9.56 percent, bananas 1.20 percent, vegetable ghee (2.5 kg) 0.91 percent, washing soap 0.68 percent, LPG 0.66 percent, cooking oil (5 litre) 0.64 percent, fresh milk 0.61 percent, wheat flour 0.59 percent and cigarettes by 0.57 percent.

On year-on-year basis, prices of potatoes declined by 38.44 percent, followed by eggs 26.67 percent, pulse gram 22.61 percent, sugar 15.56 percent, salt powder 13.26 percent, chicken 12.84 percent, pulse masoor 12.50 percent and pulse moong by 4.51 percent over the same period of last year, PBS reported.

Major increase was recorded in the prices of onions by 100.68 percent, followed by wheat flour 59.88 percent, electricity charges for Q1 59.40 percent, LPG 57.09 percent, petrol 50.60 percent, diesel 49.63 percent, tomatoes 20.62 percent and mutton 15.86 percent. Prices of chilies powder, beef, bananas and powdered milk also increased over the corresponding week of last year.
