QUETTA: A senior Balochistan official said on Sunday that security forces had carried out around 78,000 intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the province during the current year, resulting in the killing of more than 700 militants. The statement was made amid claims of improved security coordination and strategy.

Additional Chief Secretary Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat told a press conference that despite the decline in terrorist attacks, the province had still suffered heavy losses. He said 202 security personnel and 280 civilians had been martyred in various attacks and operations during the year.

Mr Shafqaat said improved planning and coordination among security forces and law enforcement agencies had helped curb militant activities. However, he added that militants continued to deliberately target civilians, posing ongoing challenges for authorities.

This year, a total of 78,000 intelligence-based operations have been carried out across various areas of #Balochistan.

He termed the designation of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its Majeed Brigade as terrorist organisations a major achievement. He said the government would pursue action through Interpol against individuals operating against Pakistan from abroad.

Responding to questions, Balochistan Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) chief Aitzaz Ahmed Goraya confirmed that the kidnapped assistant commissioner of Ziarat had been martyred. He said a search operation to recover the official’s body was under way, while his son had already been safely recovered earlier.

Mr Shafqaat said the CTD had arrested three suspects involved in the killing of Kharan SHO Muhammad Qasim Baloch. Video-recorded confessional statements of the suspects were played during the press conference.

According to the confessions, the suspects said they were linked to the banned BLA and had been ordered to abduct the SHO. They claimed the police officer resisted the kidnapping attempt and was killed as a result.

The additional chief secretary said efforts were ongoing to arrest the remaining suspects. He also said the federal government had released an additional Rs10 billion under the NFC award to strengthen security institutions and improve infrastructure, including measures to secure national highways.
