Netflix’s latest psychological drama Adolescence has taken the world by storm, topping charts in 80 countries and garnering widespread critical acclaim. The unexpected success has even surprised its creators, with co-writer and executive producer Stephen Graham hinting at the possibility of a second season.
Speaking to Variety alongside fellow creator Shane Meadows, Graham expressed amazement at the show’s rapid rise to prominence. “Somebody sent us an email saying they had been in the business for 38 years and had never seen anything have this kind of impact,” said Meadows. “We’re number one in 80 countries, including Saudi Arabia, India and Australia. It’s just incredible.” Graham, who has worked on several acclaimed productions, reflected on how deeply the series has resonated across cultures. “We had no idea it would have this kind of social impact,” he said.
“But it seems to have cut through race, creed and social hierarchies with the message it carries about youth.” Originally intended as a four-episode limited series, Adolescence follows the story of 13-year-old Jamie Cooper, played by debutant Owen Cooper, who is arrested on suspicion of murdering his classmate Katie Leonard. The show, co-created by Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham, explores themes of justice, adolescence and societal pressures.
The overwhelming response to the show has inevitably led to speculation about a second season. While no official confirmation has been made, Graham acknowledged that discussions could take place. “Possibly,” he said with a smile. “Let’s see how the figures are. But yeah, there’s the possibility of developing another story.” Meadows, while open to the idea, admitted that following up on such an acclaimed series would be a challenge. “It’s hard,” she said, though she remained enthusiastic about collaborating with Netflix again. “All day long,” she added.
