LAHORE: Owing to one-wheeling, overspeeding, lane violation, wrong overtaking and underage driving, over 560 citizens across the city have died so far this year. Around six people died and 11 received critical injuries in train accidents during the same period. Punjab government, police and traffic authorities have started several awareness campaigns to educate the citizens, especially youth, through lectures in schools, colleges, universities, public places and other important areas, asking them to follow the traffic laws. After the death of youngsters due to one-wheeling on city roads, the Punjab government directed City Traffic Police to continue its awareness campaign against one-wheeling, while the police also registered several cases against those involved in violation of traffic laws on daily basis. Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Tayyab Haffez Cheema said that one-wheeling was a deadly dangerous game, which claimed several lives of youth, leaving hundreds seriously injured. He said the main purpose of this crackdown was to save the precious lives of our youth. He directed the traffic officers and circle heads to initiate stern action against one-wheelers without discrimination, adding that no one should be spare if found involved in this dangerous act, which was causing a number of deaths and severe injuries to drivers. The CTO directed the traffic wardens to ensure smooth traffic flow by not allowing parking at wrong places, which also caused traffic jams. He said that due to this campaign, we had reduced the one-wheeling up to 60 percent on important roads.
