GHOTKI: Gunmen beat up a man and tried to cut off his nose and ears over his refusal to hand over his two daughters as vani on the orders of a jirga in Daharki, Ghotki. According to details, the attackers, who belonged to the Kobhar community, beat up Ahmed Kobhar and tried to cut off his nose and ears with a knife. The victim said that he was returning from Khenjho Town from Daharki in his pickup when he was attacked. Locals rushed to the spot and rescued Ahmed after hearing his cries. The assailants then fled. He was taken to Daharki Hospital for treatment. Later, Ahmed Kobhar, along with his brother and other family members, protested in Daharki against Muneer Kobhar and other influential persons of the area. He said that a year ago, one of his cousins had married a girl against the will of her parents. “A jirga was held and my cousin Abdul Hadi was declared as karo. He was fined Rs 1 million. He was also ordered to give a girl in vani. Hadi gave his niece as vani but refused to pay Rs 1 million and then fled from the area,” Ahmed Kobhar said. “Muneer, Wahid Bux, Abdul Ghaffar and Gul Muhammad then held another jirga. The jirga ordered me to pay Rs 1 million and hand over my two daughters — Nadia, 9, and Sakina, 7 — as vani,” said Ahmed Kobhar. “I refused to pay the fine or hand over two girls,” he said. He said that the accused then started threatening him with dire consequences. He appealed to the authorities to take action against the accused.
