The Emergency Operation Centre (EOC) for Polio Sindh confirmed on Saturday that two new polio cases had emerged in Mirpurkhas district. One case was reported from Tehsil Digri of the district, where a 36 months old boy contracted polio on 17 November 2019. The child had seven doses of polio vaccine during campaigns according to his parents. The child is not going to suffer from disability as her legs and spine are not affected but instead but has slight weakness in facial muscles. The second case is reported from Tehsil Mirpurkhas where a 72 months old boy contracted the polio virus on 20 November 2019. According to his parents, he had received seven doses during campaign and three during routine immunization. The child’s lower limbs were initially affected by the virus but he will not have to suffer from any permanent disability. The Emergency Operation Centre for Polio in Sindh strongly encourages all parents to vaccinate their children in the upcoming polio campaign as it has become clear over the course of the last few months that if OPV is not administered, the virus will thrive and spread and paralyze children. We will have campaigns starting from 16th December and will continue regularly until June so that we can reverse this trend. Sindh has 16 polio cases in 2019 out of which six are from Karachi, two from Hyderabad, two from Larkana, two from Jamshoro, two from Mirpurkhas, one each from Shaheed Benazirabad and Sajawal.
