KARACHI: A study conducted by researchers and graduates of various departments of Karachi University (KU) indicates that presence of crime in family and friends is a very important cause of delinquent behavior of displaced children. The research conducted by students of Karachi found that the major of the inmates belongs to low-income families, illiterate, involved in drug abuse and showed aggressiveness in their behaviors. Nazra Jehan, the campaign leader in Karachi said that not only the partition of Bengal but also the earthquake of 2005, Swat Operation 2008, flood of 2010, Zarb-e-Azb are some of the factors that caused displacement of a large number of children.” We neglected children victims of displacement but they also need help on humanitarian basis”, she added. “Irony is that we cannot count the migration from rural areas to this urban center of Sindh province and the children are unsafe in terms of education, health and care. Nobody either from government, city administration and others can realize to extend helping hand to save lives of innocent souls,” she said. Due to sharp increase in the mobility and migration, families have been exposed to various socio- cultural challenges and economic vulnerability in urban areas. Increasing number of street children in Karachi and other urban areas are glaring examples vulnerability of children. The research also indicates that one of the major causes of delinquency of children is the parental neglect and socio economic conditions they face. It was also noticed that drug use was very common among the children in jail, as well the child labor community. Besides this, cases of sexual abuse were also found in these children. The common element among all such victims including those affected by gang wars and law & order situation, was the lack of education as a minor number of them has ever went to school. The study found that Afghan children around 10-13 years age have adopted garbage-picking as their profession and mostly are residing in Jummah Goth within small houses with more than 12 members living as an extended family. “They face harmful factors of the hostile environment affecting their physical and mental health”, sharedAmna Zafar. Almost all of the respondents were illiterate, drug-users, aggressive in behavior, belonged to low income families group and were living in joint-family system. The data was collected by different regions of Karachi including Nusrat Bhutto colony, Khada Market Lyari, Azam Basti, Gulshan block-10. Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Azhar Rasheed Khan said that police department is also like other departments of the country. “There is no missionary and zeal in the department”, he added. He said that no attention is paid to specialization and professionalism owing to that many issues including human trafficking honor killing and issues of children go unnoticed.” The existing issues can be tackled with Inter-Agency support”, he concluded.
