KARACHI: The Counter-Terrorism Department of the Sindh police has acquired nearly 10,000 cell phones calls data from the crime scene area to track down a Chinese national’s murderers. A first information report on the incident that took place on Monday has been registered. A Chinese national, later identified as Chen Zhu, was gunned down in broad daylight in a targeted attack in the city’s upscale neighbourhood. The FIR (no. 26/18) was registered at the CTD police station under sections 302/324/34 of the Pakistan Penal Code and section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act against unidentified persons on behalf of the state. The body of the deceased has been kept at the Chhipa morgue. The police investigators had recovered at least ten empty shells of the 9mm pistol used in the incident from the crime scene which were later sent to the forensic division of the Sindh police. A forensic report of the empty shells of the 9mm pistol used in the targeted killing has been delivered to the investigators. The ballistic cross matching report suggests that a new weapon was used in the incident which had no previous record. The investigators have also acquired nearly 10,000 cell phones calls data from around the crime scene besides acquiring the data of the cell phones of the deceased and another Chinese national accompanying him in the car when the attack took place. 46-year-old Chen Zhu was serving as the managing director at a non-CPEC private shipping firm in Karachi. His car came under attack in Clifton’s Neelum Colony on Monday afternoon at around 4pm. His companion Ye Fan, a young trainee of the company, survived the attack. Police investigation suggests that after having lunch at China Town restaurant, the two men were driving towards Neelum Colony opposite Zamzama Park. They had parked their car on the roadside outside a grocery store and were sitting inside when the attack took place. The CTD is investigating the case. IGP Allah Dino Khowaja has appointed CTD in-charge Raja Omar Khattab as an investigation officer of the case. The investigating team was earlier also looking for the other Chinese national who survived the attack. The team said that they were now in touch with him and were waiting for him to recover from the trauma to record his statement. The police investigators have impounded the vehicle of the Chinese national and said that they were investigating the case from different angles. On Tuesday, Chinese authorities urged Pakistan to rapidly bring perpetrators of the incident to justice. Published in Daily Times, February 7th 2018.
