LAHORE: Elections are being held at the University of the Punjab on Monday (today) to select teachers’ representatives for the Syndicate. One member each will be elected from the four cadres: professors, associate professors, assistant professors, and lecturers. Polling will take place from 9am to 4pm in the Waheed Shaheed Hall at the Institute of Education and Research (IER). There will be a lunch break from 1pm to 2pm. Four groups of teachers have fielded their candidates. The Teachers’ Front (Founders Group), headed by PUCIT Principal Prof Dr Syed Mansoor Sarwar, has fielded the following panel: Prof Dr Shahid Ghazi (professor, Institute of Geology), Dr Hafiz Muhammad Rafique (associate professor, Department of Physics), Javed Sami (assistant professor, Department of Space Science), and Shamaila Gull (lecturer, Institute of Business and IT-IBIT). The Teachers’ Front, led by University Law College Principal Dr Shazia Qureshi, is being represented by the following candidates: Prof Dr Sajid Rashid Ahmad (professor, College of Earth and Environmental Studies-CEES), Dr Mehboob Hussain (associate professor, Department of History), Dr Muhammad Azhar Naeem (assistant professor, Electrical Engineering) and Chaudhry Naeemullah Khan (assistant professor, University Law College), and Dr Yumna Sadaf (lecturer, CEES). The Academic Forum, led by Prof Dr Saleem Mazhar, dean Faculty of Oriental Studies and chairman Department of Persian, is being represented by the following candidates: Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood (professor, Department of Information Management), Dr Asmatullah (associate professor, Department of Zoology), Iftikhar Ahmed Tarar (assistant professor, University Law College), and Abdul Majid Khan Rana (lecturer, IER). The Faculty Strengthening Forum (FSF), led by Dr Rana Ijaz, Department of Political Science, has nominated the following candidates: Dr Khalil Ahmad (associate professor, Institute of Social and Cultural Studies), Dr Muhammad Usman Awan (assistant professor, Institute of Quality and Technology Management-IQTM), and Dr Syed Dayyab Ali Gillani (lecturer, Department of Political Science). Sources privy to voting trends stated that Teachers’ Front (Founders Group) panel that includes three sitting members of the syndicate, Dr Hafiz Muhammad Rafique, Javed Sami, and Shamaila Gull, was expected to win the elections. Voting for selecting two associate professors, two assistant professors, and three lecturers to the PU Academic Council, including one female teacher from each cadre, will also be held simultaneously.
