Pakistan faces dual weather threat: heatwave in South, storm system in North

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast hot and dry weather across most parts of the country on Thursday, while warning that thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated hailstorms are likely in upper regions.

According to the Met Office, southern parts of Pakistan are expected to remain under intense heatwave conditions during daytime, especially in upper Sindh, where temperatures are likely to stay significantly above normal.

Meanwhile, rain-windstorms and thunderstorms are expected in several northern and upper areas, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, Islamabad, the Pothohar region, Kashmir and adjoining hilly areas. Isolated heavy rainfall and hailstorms may also occur in some locations.

In Islamabad and nearby areas, partly cloudy weather is expected with chances of thunderstorms, rain and isolated hailstorms later in the day.

The weather department said a fresh spell of unstable weather could affect various districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Swat, Dir, Chitral, Kalam, Kohistan, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Mardan, Swabi, Bannu and Waziristan. Strong winds and isolated heavy downpours are also likely in these districts.

Punjab is expected to remain mainly hot and dry, although dust-thunderstorms and rain are likely in Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Murree, Gujrat, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Sargodha and nearby areas. Hailstorms may occur at isolated places.

In Sindh, hot and dry weather will continue, while upper districts are likely to face severe heatwave conditions. Most districts of Balochistan are also expected to remain hot and dry, though northern areas such as Zhob, Barkhan and Musakhel may receive thunderstorms and rain during afternoon hours.

Cloudy weather with intermittent rain and thunderstorms is also forecast for Gilgit-Baltistan and parts of Kashmir.
