Iran defends peace demands after Trump rejects proposal

Iran says its proposals were 'reasonable and generous' after Trump's rejection - Türkiye Today

Iran has defended the demands outlined in its latest response to a United States peace proposal after President Donald Trump dismissed Tehran’s reply as “totally unacceptable,” deepening uncertainty around efforts to end the regional conflict.

Speaking at a weekly press briefing in Tehran on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said Iran’s response focused on what he described as the country’s “legitimate rights” rather than seeking concessions from Washington.

According to Baqaei, Tehran called for an end to the war across the region, lifting of the US blockade on Iranian ports, release of frozen Iranian assets held abroad, and guarantees for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. He also said Iran sought broader regional security arrangements, including stability in Lebanon and surrounding areas.

“We did not demand any concessions. The only thing we demanded was Iran’s legitimate rights,” Baqaei said, while accusing Washington of maintaining one-sided and “unreasonable” positions in the negotiations.

Iran also warned against foreign intervention in the Strait of Hormuz, with officials arguing that regional security should be managed by countries in the region rather than outside military powers. Tehran reiterated that Pakistan remains the official mediator between Iran and the United States, while countries such as Qatar continue to maintain communication channels with both sides.

The latest exchange follows Trump’s rejection of Iran’s formal response, which was reportedly conveyed through Pakistan on Sunday. In a post on social media, Trump said he had reviewed Iran’s proposal and described it as unacceptable, without elaborating further.

The diplomatic setback has renewed concerns over the 10-week conflict and its impact on global energy markets. Oil prices climbed sharply on Monday amid fears that continued tensions will prolong disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route.

Iranian officials nevertheless said their response was constructive and expressed hope that negotiations could eventually resume despite the current impasse.
