The reported destruction of India’s Russian-made S-400 air defence system emerged as one of the most significant developments during Marka-e-Haq, drawing widespread attention across military and strategic circles. Pakistan claimed it successfully targeted the advanced defence system on May 9, while India rejected the claim despite growing discussion surrounding the incident. Moreover, the event intensified debate over the effectiveness of modern air defence technology during high-intensity regional conflicts.
India had considered the S-400 system among its strongest defensive assets because of its ability to detect and intercept cruise and ballistic missiles travelling at extremely high speeds. Military analysts often described the system as one of the world’s most advanced air defence platforms capable of engaging multiple aerial threats simultaneously. Consequently, Indian confidence in the system remained extremely high before Pakistan reportedly disabled critical components during the conflict.

Pakistan maintained that it specifically targeted the S-400 command centre located in Udhampur, causing serious operational disruption and forcing India to arrange replacement equipment after the ceasefire. Reports circulating after the incident suggested that the command centre suffered severe damage during the Pakistani strike, which weakened India’s air defence coordination capabilities in the affected area. Furthermore, claims regarding casualties linked to the attack added more attention to the reported operation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi later appeared in photographs near an S-400 missile launcher in what many observers viewed as an attempt to counter Pakistan’s claims regarding the destruction. However, defence experts noted that the S-400 system includes several operational components, including a radar truck, command centre truck and missile launcher vehicles deployed separately within each battalion. Therefore, images showing a launcher alone did not directly address claims surrounding damage to the command centre.
Additional reports stated that an operator identified as Ram Babu Singh was killed during the strike while stationed inside the S-400 command centre at the time of the attack. Later, Indian authorities reportedly altered official statements regarding his role and affiliation, claiming he had no connection to the S-400 system despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise. As a result, speculation surrounding the incident continued to grow across regional and international defence discussions.
The reported strike on the S-400 system became a major talking point because it challenged perceptions regarding the invulnerability of advanced missile defence technology in modern warfare. Supporters of Pakistan’s claims described the operation as evidence of strategic precision and military capability during Marka-e-Haq, while critics continued questioning the extent of the reported damage. Nevertheless, the incident remained one of the most widely discussed military developments linked to the conflict.
