The Lahore Arts Council, Alhamra, is set to host a distinguished two-day Lahore Kathak Festival commencing on May 7, 2026, reaffirming its historic role as a leading institution for the preservation and promotion of classical performing arts.
The festival promises to present the rich tradition of Kathak in a contemporary and engaging manner, creating a vibrant cultural experience for audiences and artists alike.
Organised by emerging artists and dedicated practitioners of Kathak, the festival aims not only to revive the classical essence of this timeless dance form but also to reconnect it with the younger generation through meaningful artistic dialogue. The initiative reflects a renewed commitment to sustaining classical heritage while encouraging modern interpretation and creative exploration.
Alhamra’s association with classical dance, particularly through the legacy of legendary masters like Maharaj Kathak who once nurtured generations of performers within its walls, lends profound significance to this festival. As a historic center where renowned exponents of classical dance trained and inspired some of Pakistan’s finest artists, Alhamra continues to stand as a symbol of artistic excellence and continuity in dance.
Executive Director Alhamra Muhammad Nawaz Gondal, in his statement, said, “Alhamra has always remained at the forefront of promoting purposeful and high-quality cultural initiatives. Festivals such as the Lahore Kathak Festival not only revive classical traditions but also provide emerging artists with a dynamic platform for expression. By bridging tradition with contemporary sensibilities, we are ensuring that these invaluable art forms remain relevant, vibrant and accessible to future generations.”
Renowned practitioner Maan Saeed also shared his views, stating that the festival will feature both established artists and young performers, fostering an inclusive environment where new voices can emerge alongside seasoned talent. He emphasized that such platforms are essential for encouraging dialogue, innovation and continuity within classical arts.
In addition to performances, the festival will include workshops and interactive sessions designed to explore the technical, aesthetic and cultural dimensions of Kathak, offering participants a deeper understanding of the art form.
This festival is not merely a cultural event but a significant step towards the revival and sustained growth of classical dance in Lahore, reinforcing Alhamra’s enduring commitment to preserving artistic heritage while shaping the future of performing arts.
