China expressed serious concern over seizure of Iranian cargo ship

Published on: April 20, 2026 3:15 PM

China has expressed serious concern after the reported seizure of an Iranian cargo ship, urging all parties to act responsibly and uphold ceasefire commitments amid rising regional tensions. The reaction came from Beijing following reports that the vessel was forcibly intercepted during heightened maritime security measures linked to the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the United States.

According to a spokesperson for China’s foreign ministry, Beijing is closely monitoring the situation and hopes all sides will avoid escalation. The spokesperson emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and ensuring that international maritime routes remain secure and free from disruption.

China also signalled its willingness to play a constructive role in facilitating dialogue between Washington and Tehran, particularly as diplomatic efforts continue to prevent further deterioration in the region. Observers note that Beijing has consistently advocated for negotiations and de-escalation in conflicts affecting global trade routes and energy supplies.

Meanwhile, Iran has adopted a firm stance, indicating that it is not currently interested in engaging in further talks with the United States. Iranian officials stated that there are no plans for a new round of negotiations at this stage, citing dissatisfaction with Washington’s policies and accusing it of failing to change its approach.

A spokesperson for Iran’s foreign ministry said that under the current circumstances, dialogue with the United States is not feasible. The official warned that continued policies by Washington could exacerbate tensions and lead to further instability in the region.

The incident has added another layer of uncertainty to an already fragile situation, particularly given the strategic importance of key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of global energy supplies passes.

Analysts say the coming days will be critical in determining whether diplomatic channels can be revived or if tensions will continue to escalate, potentially impacting global markets and regional security.
