In a statement, her office said the event highlights the importance of education in fostering stability and mutual understanding worldwide. It added that her participation reflects the United States’ commitment to strengthening international cooperation on key global issues.
UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric confirmed that, according to UN records, no previous US first lady or first gentleman has presided over a Security Council meeting. While spouses of world leaders have attended UN events before, none had formally chaired a Council session.
The meeting comes as President Donald Trump advances his “Board of Peace” initiative, which aims to promote global stability through diplomatic and educational efforts. During his recent State of the Union address, Trump praised Melania Trump’s efforts, saying she remains deeply committed to protecting and supporting youth.
Her appearance also takes place amid a complex phase in US-UN relations. Since returning to office, President Trump has withdrawn support from several UN agencies, including the World Health Organization, while also maintaining financial contributions to the organisation’s general and peacekeeping budgets.

Despite political differences, the United States remains one of the UN’s largest contributors. Officials say Melania Trump’s leadership of the upcoming session underscores Washington’s continued engagement with the Security Council and its interest in advancing education as a tool for peace and international cooperation.
