Basant fever has once again swept across Lahore, as streets and rooftops fill with colorful kites and excited crowds, creating a festive mood that connects tradition with modern city life. Meanwhile, Mochi Gate has emerged as the busiest marketplace, where buyers from different parts of the city gather to purchase kites and strings, despite growing concerns over increasing prices.
However, rising rates have clearly affected purchasing power, as many citizens express frustration over the high cost of basic Basant items. Currently, one taawa kite is being sold for around Rs300 to Rs400, while one-and-a-half taawa costs between Rs400 and Rs600, depending on quality and location. As a result, families are now forced to limit their spending or buy fewer items.

In addition, kite string prices have become a major issue for young people, as two-piece pinna is now priced between Rs8,000 and Rs10,000, making it difficult for many to afford. Moreover, larger 200-piece string rolls are reportedly being sold for up to Rs12,000, which has pushed several buyers to share costs or look for cheaper alternatives.
Despite these challenges, preparations continue across the city, with highways decorated in bright colors and cultural landmarks dressed in traditional Basant themes. Furthermore, organizers are preparing to fly a massive kite at Liberty Chowk, while singers, designers, and artisans remain busy producing songs, clothes, and accessories for the celebrations.

At the same time, the provincial government has introduced safety measures and travel incentives to support public participation in a controlled way. Authorities have distributed safety rods, arranged free public transport for three days, and added QR codes on kites and strings to track sellers and ensure compliance with regulations. Ultimately, officials urge citizens to celebrate responsibly while preserving the cultural spirit of Basant.
