US approves microsoft to send Nvidia AI chips to UAE

Published on: November 3, 2025 6:50 PM

In a landmark move that highlights the growing importance of artificial intelligence in global geopolitics, the United States has approved Microsoft to export advanced Nvidia AI chips to the United Arab Emirates for the first time. The U.S. Commerce Department’s decision marks a major breakthrough in Washington’s efforts to balance technological partnerships while maintaining strict national security controls over high-end chip exports. This clearance allows Microsoft to move ahead with its ambitious AI and cloud expansion plans in the Gulf region, a key front in the global technology race.

The approval came after Microsoft secured an export license for Nvidia’s powerful processors, which are essential for building and training cutting-edge AI systems. These chips, known for their unmatched computing capabilities, are tightly regulated by the U.S. due to concerns about potential misuse in military or surveillance applications. Microsoft President Brad Smith confirmed that the company became the first to receive such a license under the Trump administration, calling it a milestone that reflects full compliance with U.S. export and cybersecurity laws.

Smith emphasized that Microsoft achieved this approval by meeting every technical, physical, and cybersecurity requirement imposed by the U.S. government. He stated that the company’s ability to align with Washington’s security standards demonstrates its credibility and global reliability as a technology partner. This move also signifies growing trust between the U.S. and the UAE, following increasing collaboration in advanced technologies, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence development.

The export license follows a high-profile deal between U.S. President Donald Trump and UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed al-Nahyan to establish a massive AI data center campus in Abu Dhabi. The project aims to position the UAE as a leading digital hub in the Middle East while strengthening U.S.-UAE technology cooperation. It also serves as a counterbalance to China’s expanding AI influence in the region, signaling Washington’s strategic intent to maintain leadership in emerging technologies.

With regulatory barriers now cleared, Microsoft has unveiled plans to raise its total investment in the UAE from $7.3 billion over the last three years to over $7.9 billion by 2029. Out of this amount, $5.5 billion will be allocated to AI and cloud infrastructure, underlining a long-term commitment to the region’s digital transformation. This development not only reinforces Microsoft’s presence in the Middle East but also represents a significant milestone in the U.S. push to shape the global future of artificial intelligence.
