Lahore deploys anti-smog guns today to fight pollution

Published on: October 2, 2025 6:18 PM

For the first time in Punjab’s history, anti-smog guns have been introduced in Lahore on the special instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. The initiative aims to reduce air pollution and provide relief from hazardous smog conditions. These high-capacity guns are being seen as a crucial step to control rising respiratory and lung-related health issues that intensify during the winter season.

The guns, which are mounted on tankers holding 16,000 liters of water, have the ability to spray water up to 100 meters into the air. By dispersing fine water droplets, they effectively capture dust, pollutants, and harmful particles suspended in the air. This process significantly reduces pollution levels, creating cleaner air for residents and helping curb health risks associated with smog exposure.

Globally, similar technology has already been implemented in countries such as India and China, where smog remains a major challenge. Lahore, which consistently ranks among the most polluted cities in the world, is now adopting this modern approach to address worsening air quality. The decision reflects a growing recognition of the urgent need for innovative measures to combat environmental challenges.

According to officials, 15 anti-smog guns have been successfully manufactured locally, showcasing the technical expertise of local industries. Additionally, five more are currently under production to further strengthen the city’s anti-smog fleet. This locally built technology not only reduces costs but also ensures timely deployment across different areas of the provincial capital.

The introduction of these guns has been widely welcomed by environmental experts, who believe that consistent use can help reduce smog levels, particularly during peak pollution months. Authorities have assured that more such measures will follow, as Punjab continues to prioritize environmental health and sustainable solutions for the well-being of its citizens.
