Punjab has introduced modern systems to fight smog, marking the first time in the province’s history that advanced monitoring, forecasting, and analysis have been deployed to address seasonal pollution challenges. Authorities are implementing preventive steps, focusing on maintaining air quality, reducing crop residue burning, and ensuring public awareness before the smog season intensifies. Officials believe these measures will help the province manage pollution levels effectively.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has directed strict enforcement of preventive measures, assigning Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb to lead a province-wide anti-smog operation. Under this campaign, relevant departments have been mobilized to monitor pollution sources and maintain city cleanliness. Police, administrative teams, and the Environmental Protection Agency are tasked with taking strong action against illegal practices, including the burning of garbage and plastics.

Authorities have also recorded air quality levels across major cities, with Lahore at 152, Gujranwala at 160, Faisalabad at 156, and Kasur at 144, while Murree remains significantly lower at 48. This monitoring allows early detection of rising pollution, helping the government respond quickly. Weather conditions, including dry air and slow wind speeds, are also playing a role in pollution levels, making monitoring and control efforts crucial.
To strengthen the fight against smog, Punjab has deployed 43 new air quality monitoring devices across multiple cities. These advanced systems provide real-time updates on pollution levels and improve forecasting accuracy. This initiative places Punjab at the forefront of environmental management, offering early warnings about changing air conditions and helping residents prepare better for smog-related health concerns.

In addition, “Suthra Punjab” teams have been activated to ensure water sprinkling, cover debris at construction sites, and promote cleanliness across urban centers. The campaign aims to reduce dust and airborne particles, which contribute to worsening air quality. Officials emphasize that maintaining citywide cleanliness, combined with preventive technology, will create stronger protection against smog.
