Pakistan raised concerns over India’s proposed water infrastructure projects on Chenab River

Pakistan says India has diverted the flow of Chenab River - TRT World

Pakistan has raised concerns over India’s proposed water infrastructure projects on the Chenab River, urging the international community to ensure compliance with international agreements governing shared water resources.

In a statement issued on Friday, Pakistan’s Foreign Office expressed reservations about India’s reported Chenab Up-Link Tunnel project, warning that any diversion of water from the Chenab River to another river system would amount to a serious breach of the Indus Waters Treaty.

The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that such actions would be inconsistent with the treaty’s provisions as well as the principles outlined in the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties and broader international water laws. According to Pakistan, the treaty clearly defines the rights and obligations of both countries regarding the use of shared rivers.

Pakistan also voiced concern over reports that India plans to expand the storage capacity of the Salal Dam. The spokesperson said the move could provide New Delhi with a level of control over river flows that exceeds what is permitted under the treaty framework.

The statement suggested that the proposed projects reflected an attempt to use water resources as a strategic tool. Pakistan called upon the international community to encourage India to halt any initiatives that could restrict, divert or otherwise affect water allocated to Pakistan under the existing agreement.

The Foreign Office reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to protecting its water rights and national interests. It stressed that the country would continue to pursue all available avenues under international law to safeguard its share of transboundary water resources.

The issue of water sharing has long been a sensitive aspect of relations between Pakistan and India. Pakistani officials maintain that adherence to agreed mechanisms and international legal commitments is essential for regional stability and cooperation.

Pakistan has urged stakeholders to support the full and sincere implementation of the Indus Waters Treaty to prevent further tensions over shared water resources.
