Rs5 hike in three days: Sugar becomes pricier in Karachi

Sugar prices in Karachi have seen a noticeable rise in just the past three days. The cost has jumped by Rs5 per kilogram in retail markets. Currently, sugar is being sold for as high as Rs180 per kg in many areas. In smaller neighborhood shops, some vendors are charging up to Rs190 per kg, adding pressure on consumers.

In wholesale markets across Karachi, the trend is similar. The price per kg has reached Rs174. Wholesalers link this increase to a growing demand ahead of the Islamic month of Muharram. Traditionally, sugar consumption rises during this period due to religious events and communal food preparation.

Retailers and wholesalers alike expect the prices to stay high for the coming days. Many shopkeepers are bulk buying in anticipation of further demand. This stockpiling is contributing to market pressure, pushing rates higher.

To counter the hike, the Sugar Advisory Board has stepped in. It has approved the import of 500,000 tons of sugar. Officials say this move aims to boost supply and stabilize prices. However, the imported sugar may take time to arrive and show its impact.

Until then, residents of Karachi are likely to face costly sugar at least through early Muharram. Consumers and shopkeepers alike are calling on the government for timely intervention to prevent further hikes.
