The Federal Flood Commission (FFC) has said that due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas, River Chenab is presently experiencing “Medium Flood” at Khanki and “Low Flood” at Qadirabad while maintaining normal flow at Marala Barrage. According to daily FFC report on Friday, River Indus is also in “Medium Flood” in “Guddu-Sukkur” reach and in “Low Flood” in “Tarbela-Taunsa” reach while River Kabul is in “Low Flood” at Nowshera. Meanwhile, all other major rivers in the Indus River system i.e. Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej are discharging normal flows. According to the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), Lahore, the Upper Air Cyclonic Circulation that was positioned over Northeast Rajasthan (India) has now shifted to Northwest Rajasthan and adjacent areas of Pakistan. Divergence of Southwestern winds is affecting Eastern Sindh (Pakistan) and Rajasthan (India), while Southeastern wind divergence is impacting Indian Punjab. Directional convergence is observed over Southern Punjab and adjoining Sindh. A trough of strong Westerly Wave previously over Northeastern Iran has now moved to Northern Afghanistan with a Seasonal Low centered over Northeastern Balochistan. Moderate to strong moist air currents from the Arabian Sea are presently penetrating into most parts of Pakistan while light to moderate currents from the Bay of Bengal are reaching up to 5000 feet. For the next 24 hours, FFD, Lahore, has predicted scattered thunderstorm rain of Moderate Intensity with isolated Heavy Falls over Punjab (Sargodha, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sahiwal & Multan Divisions) and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including upper catchments of all major rivers of IRS. Widespread thunderstorm rain of Moderate Intensity with isolated Heavy Falls may occur over Islamabad, Punjab (Rawalpindi, DG Khan & Bahawalpur Divisions), Sindh and Balochistan (Zhob, Nasirabad, Sibbi & Kalat Divisions) during the same period. Over the next 48 hours (from August 16 to 18, 2024), Medium to High-level flash flooding is anticipated in the hill torrents of the DG Khan Division (Punjab) as well as in the nullahs of the Sibbi, Nasirabad, Zhob and Kalat Divisions. Additionally, light to moderate flash flooding is expected in the Larkana and Hyderabad Divisions, specifically affecting Dadu and Naushahro Feroze Districts.
