Sir: The levying of increased general sales tax (GST) on petrol, oil and lubricant (POL) products was a clear injustice with the people of Pakistan. Now the consumers of all these products are paying GST at the much higher rate of 27 per cent. To be fair, the federal government was generous for the initial three months when the prices were reduced but from January and February 2015, the generosity has been turned into cruelty by those who do not pay out of their pockets for consumption of POL products. Adoption of fuel saving measures is advisable also in view of the recent petrol crisis, which was caused due to the failure to import petrol in timely fashion as well as substantially increased petrol consumption. The country relies for more than 80 percent of its domestic requirements on imports. Saving in fuel consumption will not only help the motorists with limited resources to offset the adverse impact of 27 percent GST on their domestic budget but also go a long way in keeping the import bill under check. So the government is required to pass on the complete relief of falling prices in the international market and the general public should follow fuel saving measures in the larger national interest.
