The United States has launched military strikes against Iran after a helicopter-related incident in the Strait of Hormuz, while explosions were reported in Iran’s Hormozgan province. The development has raised fears of a wider conflict in the region as US strikes on Iran mark a major escalation in tensions between Washington and Tehran.
According to the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the military action was defensive in nature and was carried out in response to an earlier incident involving a U.S. military helicopter. American officials said the operation was intended to protect U.S. forces and interests in the Gulf region.
The strikes came after President Donald Trump claimed that Iran had brought down a U.S. Apache helicopter during a patrol mission over the Strait of Hormuz. Trump said both pilots survived the incident but added that the United States would have to respond to the attack.
