According to Indian media reports, selectors are evaluating long-term leadership options as they prepare for the next phase of the team’s development. A final decision is expected to be made after consultations with head coach Gautam Gambhir, although reports suggest that a change in captaincy is increasingly likely.
The move is said to be part of a broader strategy aimed at appointing a leader capable of guiding the team through the next two T20 World Cups. Cricket officials are reportedly looking for stability and continuity as India plans for future international tournaments.
Among the names being considered, batter Shreyas Iyer has emerged as a leading candidate for the captaincy. Reports also indicate that Tilak Varma could be appointed vice-captain, potentially replacing Axar Patel in the role.
While Suryakumar led India to T20 World Cup success, his individual batting performances have come under scrutiny in recent months. Critics have questioned his consistency, particularly after a disappointing campaign in the 2026 Indian Premier League.
Playing for Mumbai Indians, Suryakumar scored 270 runs in 13 matches during the tournament. The franchise endured a difficult season and finished ninth in the standings, adding to concerns over the captain’s recent form.
