India crush New Zealand to retain T20 world cup title

Published on: March 9, 2026 1:39 PM

India successfully defended their T20 World Cup crown with a commanding 96-run victory over New Zealand in the final played in Ahmedabad on Sunday. The Indian team delivered a dominant performance with both bat and ball, setting a huge total and then restricting the opposition comfortably. Their aggressive batting display laid the foundation for victory, while disciplined bowling later ensured that New Zealand never came close to chasing the massive target. As a result, India lifted the trophy again after producing one of the most convincing performances of the tournament.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total of 255 for five in their allotted 20 overs after New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner chose to field first. The decision quickly backfired as Indian openers launched a powerful attack right from the start of the innings. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson built a rapid partnership of 98 runs within only seven overs, giving India a dream start. Sharma played an explosive knock of 52 off just 21 balls, striking six fours and three sixes before Rachin Ravindra finally broke the partnership.

After Sharma’s dismissal, Ishan Kishan joined Samson and the pair continued the aggressive approach that kept the scoreboard moving rapidly. They stitched together an impressive 105-run partnership for the second wicket in only 47 deliveries, placing New Zealand bowlers under immense pressure. Samson led the charge with a brilliant 89 from 46 balls, smashing eight sixes and five fours during his attacking innings. Kishan also played a crucial role by scoring a quick 54 off 25 deliveries, hitting four fours and four sixes.

However, New Zealand briefly fought back in the 16th over when James Neesham removed both Samson and Kishan in quick succession to slow India’s scoring rate. The same over saw another breakthrough when Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav departed for a golden duck, leaving India at 204 for four. Despite those setbacks, India finished strongly as Shivam Dube provided a powerful late boost to the innings. He remained unbeaten on 26 from just eight balls, striking three fours and two sixes to push the total beyond 250.

In response, New Zealand struggled to maintain the required run rate and eventually managed only 159 runs while chasing the daunting target. Tim Seifert fought hard and scored a valuable half-century, but the rest of the batting lineup failed to build strong partnerships. Meanwhile, India’s bowling attack delivered a disciplined performance that kept constant pressure on the opposition. Jasprit Bumrah led the bowling effort with four wickets, while Axar Patel supported him effectively by claiming three important dismissals.

With this dominant victory, India once again proved their strength in the shortest format of the game and successfully defended the prestigious T20 World Cup title. The team’s balanced performance highlighted the depth of its batting lineup and the reliability of its bowling attack under pressure. Furthermore, several players stepped up at key moments, demonstrating the confidence and experience required to perform on the biggest stage. Ultimately, India’s aggressive approach and consistent teamwork ensured a memorable triumph in the tournament final.
