MQM-P calls for end to petroleum levy

Published on: June 4, 2026 11:15 AM

Farooq Sattar, Mustafa Kamal join ranks of MQM-P in bid to reinvigorate party

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) has called on the government to abolish the petroleum levy and broaden tax collection by targeting wealthy segments of society, arguing that the current tax structure places an excessive burden on ordinary citizens.

The demand was made by senior MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar during a press conference in Karachi, where the party unveiled its proposed shadow budget ahead of the upcoming federal budget.

Addressing the media, Sattar said the petroleum levy should be withdrawn immediately to provide relief to consumers struggling with rising living costs. He also urged the government to reduce taxes on the salaried middle class, which he said has been disproportionately affected by inflation and economic pressures in recent years.

The MQM-P leader further proposed tax relief measures for small farmers and agricultural workers, arguing that greater support for the agriculture sector would help strengthen economic activity and improve livelihoods in rural areas.

Presenting the party’s budget recommendations, Sattar described the MQM-P’s shadow budget as a people-centric proposal aimed at easing financial hardships and promoting economic growth. He said the purchasing power of citizens has declined significantly, making it increasingly difficult for households to meet everyday expenses.

Sattar emphasized that Pakistan’s economic sovereignty is closely linked to national stability and development. According to him, the country’s economy is experiencing a period of stagnation that can only be overcome through increased domestic investment, productive economic policies and support for local businesses.

He also highlighted the importance of attracting investment and creating an environment conducive to sustainable growth. The MQM-P believes that expanding the tax net to include affluent sectors and reducing the burden on lower- and middle-income groups would contribute to a more balanced economic framework.

During the press conference, Sattar additionally praised the diplomatic efforts of Shehbaz Sharif and Syed Asim Munir, stating that their initiatives had helped draw international attention toward Pakistan.
