Ronaldo chases history with sixth world cup appearance

Published on: May 19, 2026 7:27 PM

Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal national football team into the 2026 FIFA World Cup after coach Roberto Martinez included the veteran striker in his final squad. At 41 years old, Ronaldo is set to become the first player to appear in six separate World Cup tournaments, further extending his remarkable international football career. The experienced forward currently plays for Al Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia after successful spells with several major European clubs.

The former Real Madrid CF and Manchester United FC star remains Portugal’s most influential player despite his age and continues to hold the record for most international goals in men’s football history. Ronaldo has scored 143 goals for Portugal and remains determined to win the World Cup for the first time in his legendary career. Portugal have consistently challenged major teams in international tournaments but have never managed to secure football’s biggest trophy.

The tournament could also produce another high-profile clash between Ronaldo and longtime rival Lionel Messi, who is expected to represent Argentina national football team at his own sixth World Cup. Messi guided Argentina to World Cup glory in Qatar four years ago, while Ronaldo continues searching for the only major title missing from his international achievements. Football fans worldwide are eagerly anticipating the possibility of another memorable meeting between the two iconic players during the tournament.

Portugal’s squad includes several experienced stars and emerging talents from Europe’s top clubs, giving Roberto Martinez a balanced and competitive team ahead of the competition. Midfielders Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva are expected to play key creative roles, while Paris Saint-Germain players Vitinha, Joao Neves, Nuno Mendes, and Goncalo Ramos also earned selection. Ronaldo’s Al Nassr teammate Joao Felix was included as well, alongside several players representing clubs across England, Spain, Italy, France, and Saudi Arabia.

Before beginning their World Cup journey, Portugal will play friendly matches against Chile and Nigeria as part of preparations for the major tournament. Their World Cup campaign starts against DR Congo national football team on June 17 before facing Uzbekistan and Colombia in Group K later in the month. Portugal’s coaching staff hopes these matches will help the squad build rhythm and confidence before entering the knockout stages of the competition.

The announcement of Ronaldo’s selection has generated huge excitement among Portuguese supporters and football fans around the world who continue following his historic career. Even at 41, Ronaldo remains one of football’s biggest global stars and continues breaking records at international level with remarkable consistency. As Portugal prepare for another World Cup challenge, attention will again focus heavily on whether Ronaldo can finally guide his country to football’s greatest prize before retiring from international competition.
