Fitness app leak exposes French aircraft carrier location

Published on: March 20, 2026 11:14 PM

A fitness tracking app has reportedly revealed the location of France’s flagship aircraft carrier, raising serious security concerns for military operations in the Mediterranean region. According to reports, a French navy member unintentionally shared sensitive location data while using the popular app Strava during routine exercise aboard the vessel.

The data reportedly exposed the position of the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which France deployed to the eastern Mediterranean earlier this month. The deployment followed escalating tensions after US-Israeli strikes on Iran, with French authorities describing the mission as a defensive measure supporting allied forces in the region.

Investigations revealed that the sailor had been jogging in circles on the moving ship, with the activity publicly visible on the app. Analysts matched the jogging route with satellite imagery, confirming that the aircraft carrier was operating northwest of Cyprus at the time, highlighting how easily sensitive military locations can be exposed through everyday technology.

Furthermore, the same individual’s activity history showed movement in Northern Europe, including Denmark and Sweden, where the carrier had previously been stationed. This pattern of data sharing has intensified concerns about operational secrecy, especially when military personnel unknowingly publish location details through publicly accessible platforms.

French military authorities have responded by stating that strict guidelines already exist regarding the use of such applications. Officials confirmed that if the reported breach is verified, appropriate action will be taken, while emphasizing that personnel are regularly warned about the risks associated with digital tracking tools.

Notably, similar incidents have occurred in the past, including a 2018 case where Strava heat maps exposed locations of military bases in conflict zones like Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan. Experts warn that such data can reveal movement routes and patterns, potentially putting operations and personnel at risk if accessed by hostile actors.
