Hamas urges Iran to avoid targeting neighbors

What Can Be Done About Hamas Fighters? | RAND

GAZA CITY, Palestine — Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on Saturday called on Iran to refrain from striking neighboring countries, even as it reaffirmed Tehran’s right to defend itself against Israel and the United States.

In a statement, Hamas emphasized that while Iran has the right to respond to attacks “by all available means in accordance with international norms and laws,” it should avoid escalating conflict in nearby nations. The call reflects Hamas’ concern over regional stability amid rising tensions following recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran.

The movement also appealed to the international community to work toward an immediate halt to the ongoing war, highlighting the humanitarian toll the conflict has had in the region. Hamas’ warning comes amid fears that the broader Middle East could be drawn further into military escalation.

Hamas has a long-standing relationship with Tehran, receiving political, diplomatic, and military support over the years. The movement previously condemned the killing of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, on the first day of the conflict, calling it a “heinous crime.” In its statement, Hamas acknowledged Khamenei’s pivotal role in supporting the Palestinian cause and the resistance movement in Gaza.

The group’s message underscores its dual stance: backing Iran’s right to self-defense while cautioning against regional spillover. Analysts note that Hamas is attempting to balance its allegiance to Tehran with the practical need to prevent broader destabilization in neighboring countries, particularly given the fragile security environment in Gaza and surrounding areas.

Hamas’ statements highlight the complex web of alliances and tensions in the Middle East, as local and regional actors navigate the fallout of the war while addressing international scrutiny over the escalating conflict.
