Rubio meets China’s top diplomat in Munich

Published on: February 13, 2026 9:15 PM

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Munich Security Conference on Friday. The meeting matters as it signals warming U.S.-China relations ahead of President Donald Trump’s planned April visit to China. The encounter affects bilateral diplomacy, trade discussions, and regional security planning between Washington and Beijing.

This marks at least the second in-person meeting between Rubio and Wang, who are working to ease tensions over trade, tariffs, and Taiwan. Both sides have emphasized the importance of dialogue to prevent misunderstandings and maintain stability in Asia-Pacific relations. Analysts view these meetings as crucial preparation for higher-level negotiations.

Earlier this month, Trump held a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing the discussion as “very positive.” The call highlighted shared interests in economic cooperation and regional security. Observers said the phone conversation laid the groundwork for the upcoming presidential visit and further diplomatic engagement.

At the Munich conference, Rubio and Wang shook hands and posed for photographs before their senior aides joined them for formal discussions. Neither leader made public remarks, and they declined to answer questions from reporters, reflecting the sensitive nature of the talks. The meeting focused on private negotiations and strategic coordination between the two delegations.

Officials noted that this diplomatic engagement complements broader U.S.-China efforts to stabilize economic and security ties. Both sides plan additional meetings in the coming weeks, with Washington emphasizing open communication and Beijing seeking assurance on key policy areas. The discussions are likely to shape the agenda for Trump’s visit.
