The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially released the final list of candidates contesting Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). The commission declared that the list, finalized on March 27, 2024, is final and no new nominations will be accepted going forward. This move aims to ensure clarity and fairness in the upcoming Senate elections.
In total, 16 candidates are contesting for the seven general seats from KP. Additionally, four candidates have been announced for the women’s reserved seats, and six for the technocrat category. The distribution reflects intense competition among major political parties in the province.
For the general seats, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) each have fielded one candidate. The technocrat category sees a candidate from JI in the race, while PPP has also nominated a contender for the women’s seat. These nominations highlight the strategic contest between parties for influence in the upper house.
The Election Commission had earlier released the official election schedule on July 4, stating that the polling will be held on July 21 in the KP Provincial Assembly. Members of the provincial assembly will cast their votes to elect senators representing KP.
This election is significant as it will impact the political balance in the Senate, giving parties an opportunity to strengthen their presence at the federal level. The ECP’s clear guidelines and finalized candidate list aim to facilitate a smooth and transparent electoral process.
