Lahore is facing an escalating air pollution crisis, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) surging to dangerous levels. On Thursday morning at 9 AM, the city’s overall AQI reached a critical level of 790. Some areas were hit particularly hard, with the Ghazi Road Interchange recording an alarming AQI of 1280, followed by Maratib Ali Road at 1107, and Gulberg at 1039.
By midday, the situation had worsened significantly. The city’s overall AQI skyrocketed to a hazardous 1591. Gulberg emerged as the most polluted area, with an AQI of 2816. Bedian Road followed closely at 2726, while Shadman registered 2441. Other heavily impacted areas included Johar Town at 1774, Ghazi Road at 1645, Ferozepur Road at 1762, Township at 1645, and Askari 10 at 1276.
In response, the district administration has ramped up enforcement against businesses violating the 8 PM closure orders. Authorities have sealed 75 shops, one wedding hall, and 14 restaurants for defying the ban on outdoor dining.
“We strongly urge residents to limit outdoor exposure and stay indoors until air quality improves,” said the Deputy Commissioner. He also reminded the public of the ongoing ban on all outdoor activities, including outdoor dining, in effect until November 17 due to the hazardous smog levels gripping the city.
