Sir: I was surprised to know that President Mamnoon Hussain has conveyed his desire to mediate between Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. My first reaction was, why now and why one and a half years later? The tussle between the PM and Imran Khan started when the latter decided to protest against the alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) staged a historic sit-in for 126 days. I think that was the best time for the President to mediate. The President of Pakistan is required to be an impartial post whom all political parties are ‘allowed’ to meet on the basis of equality. I, like many others, lost confidence in the President’s impartiality when he headed a political meeting of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in Karachi. Mr President, while admitting that there is corruption in the country, still gave a clean chit to the PML-N government by stating that there are no scandals against it. It appears that the President watches only one TV channel — PTV — in the President’s House otherwise he would not have made such a laughable comment. TALAAT KHURSHIDIslamabad
